In Costa Rica MIEL DE MARIOLA ( non stinging native bee honey ) is traditionally used for the treatment of wounds, burns and bruises. Studies in the National University of Costa Rica (UNA) on safety of MIEL DE MARIOLA, showed its antimicrobial activity against microbial cultures clinically important and presented microbial counts meeting the criteria of microbiological quality of non-sterile substances for pharmacist use set by the European Pharmacopoeia. In addition its ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species produced by human polymorph nuclear leukocytes and the ability to inhibit the enzyme xanthine oxidase justify the  ethnopharmacologicalor or ethnical medicine  use for healing wounds, burns, and bruises.

Scientific tests have proven the antioxidant action of MIEL DE MARIOLA. Is capable of inhibiting the oxidation of biomolecules and thereby helps prevent disease and consumption benefits the immune, reproductive and circulatory systems. The positive correlation between total phenolic content and ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value, confirm the antioxidant capacities of MIEL DE MARIOLA due to the high degree of phenolic constituents. This is due to the neutralization of free radicals and the inhibition of xanthine oxidase enzyme. Both mechanisms interfere with the inflammatory process and promote the redox homeostasis.

A Guideline for Care of wounds, bruises and burns with MIEL DE MARIOLA

Application and Removal for healing, burns, wounds and skin conditions:


* Wash hands thoroughly
* Asses the wound or skin condition
* Look for any signs of redness, pain, swelling, or heat within or around the wound.
* Clean the wound and the skin around with sterile saline water  or other wound cleanser
* Dry the skin around the wound gently with a gauze
* Apply the appropriate amount of MIEL DE MARIOLA with an applicator and protect the wound with gauze


To make the dressing change : Remove the gauze gently . If it is difficult to remove, moisten with saline or water. Discard the old dressing.

Antibacterial activity related to MIEL DE MARIOLA and honey bees (Apis mellifera) in Costa Rica. The results are presented as percentage of honey bee species by inhibiting bacterial growth achieved in a given concentration.
